We didn’t think we’d be hearing any bigger news than Disney CEO Bob Iger stepping down today!
But that was before Disney just announced the DATE Spaceship Earth (as we know it!) will be CLOSING!
Disney has just released a statement that they’ll begin reimagining the iconic Epcot attraction starting on May 26th, 2020.
Disney went on to say, “this means Spaceship Earth in its current form will close for a time starting that day.”
There weren’t very many additional details released about Spaceship Earth’s transformation that we didn’t know already, EXCEPT for this new artist’s rendering of the Eygpt portion of the classic ride! According to Disney, “You’ll visit Egypt, which is part of the current version of the attraction, but it will be an Egypt like you’ve never seen before, transformed through the power of light.”

Disney also said, “Throughout the attraction, you’ll hear new narration and see how light plays a central role in our shared human journey, coming to life in dynamic ways in a celebration of the magic that’s possible when we all come together.” This is similar to the statements Bob Chapek, Disney’s new as-of-today CEO, made during last year’s D23 Expo.
We’ll keep following this story and let you know of any new Spaceship Earth details as soon as they’re released. In the meantime, we hope you get to ride this classic attraction before it closes on May 26th!

Are you going to miss the old version of Spaceship Earth? Let us know how you feel about Spaceship Earth being reimagined in the comments below!
So glad we are going before it closes – never been to Disney before and would be a big thing to miss. We are also just managing to catch Big Thunder Mountain as it closes half way through our visit!
I’m sure other things will be closed when we are there, but hopefully nothing too major!
I’m so sad this is closing before I get to be a cast members again. I’ll miss the original but if the new one is just a revamped version I won’t completely be upset
Will it be open before November 2020
So does this mean if I am there on May 26th will I be able to ride it or not?
So the last day to ride it will be 5/25? Only asking because our first day will be 5/25 and I was planning to go to another park that day, but this info would change that.
So sad that it will close just a couple of weeks before our visit! I don’t feel like my Disney vacation has truly begun until I smell Rome burning!
do you have any news/ specific date for the opening of the ratatouille ride in epcot this summer?
Michaela, no specifics yet, but we’ll report when we do.
Paul, if they stick to the timeline, you are correct.
Goose, it sounds like you will not.
Just rearranged a couple dining reservations just in case. Weren’t a lot of available times though. Things are getting booked full at the character dinners.
Robin, it’s expected to go down for many months — potentially a couple of years.
Does anyone know when Spaceship Earth is due to re-open?
Well, I HAVE to ride it during my April trip then. I’m just curious why they selected May. Isn’t the summer months the BUSIEST time for WDW visitors? As Spock would say, “it’s illogical”.
Nooo! We’re going June 4th. I’ve been a few times but my daughter hasn’t and she was looking forward to it… I guess that means we’ll have to go back again in the future!
Ruth, it hasn’t been announced yet. We likely won’t hear until it’s very close to opening.
Oh drat our trip begins on the May 29. I hope this won’t be another Imagination disaster
I was informed by a Cast Member on the tram that the refurbishment will be a lengthy 2 years! So sad that I most likely won’t be able to go for it’s final day.
