With nationwide closures in effect, we’ve been wondering when we might see Disneyland reopen.
Disneyland has remained closed since March 14th, marking the longest closure in park history. Since the situation is constantly evolving, Disney has not announced when they expect to reopen. But Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently commented on how long he expects large gatherings to be suspended for.
When Disneyland first closed its gates, it was scheduled to last through March 31st. But, when an extension was announced, Disney didn’t give a new opening date, instead saying it would last “until further notice.”
While we don’t have any official word from Disney, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently made comments on how long it may be until the city resumes large functions again. According to Mayor Garcetti, large gatherings like sporting events or concerts may not resume until 2021.
In an interview with CNN, Garcetti said “It’s difficult to imagine us getting together in the thousands anytime soon, so I think we should be prepared for that this year.” Garcetti did mention that he has some optimism, as Los Angeles seems to have flattened the curve, but the local stay-at-home order has been extended until at least May 15th.
The mayor also explained that the reopening of businesses will likely be a slow process, saying, “There is no light switch that will go on, this is more like a circuit breaker box and we have to have the ability to turn it all off again should we see outbreaks.”
While Garcetti did not directly refer to Disneyland in the interview, the theme parks would likely fall under the “large gatherings” he mentioned, given the capacity of the parks. We’ll keep an eye out for any additional updates from Disney or the local government!
